Berkshire & The Thames Valley

We are pleased to introduce our new website. This site is designed as a fast link to news and information on First’s bus and coach operations in Berkshire. We hope you find the information you are looking for.
First’s bus and coach operations in Berkshire are designed to offer a reliable network of services for workers, shoppers and visitors. The comprehensive network offers an attractive alternative to the car for many journeys. Congestion is a problem across the UK but our proximity to London, the M4 and the M25 means that Berkshire is affected by the continuing increase in traffic around the south east of England. By working in partnership with local authorities and other stakeholders, First in Berkshire is being innovative in order to encourage more passengers to leave the car at home. However, we need more bus priority, so that our vehicles do not sit in the same traffic that they are designed to combat. A bus can comfortably carry the same number of passengers that can be accomodated in 15 cars. Buses also use less fuel per passenger and do not require parking spaces for several hours in town centres.
If everybody who currently drives to work left their car at home just one day a week, traffic on our roads at peak times would resemble levels on school holidays. This would enable our buses to get to their destinations in less time and frequencies could be improved as a result. Less vehicles on the road also means less accidents, and consequently less burdon on our police and ambulance services.
