Improving our stations

Our passengers’ experience of the station environment significantly influences their perception of their overall journey. We are committed to improving the safety, security, accessibility and general condition of our stations as part of improving customer service.

We have a significant ongoing investment programme in new and improved station facilities that totalled £40 million during the past year. Improvements include redecorating waiting rooms, toilets and booking halls, improving customer information systems and the introduction of improved access and security measures. Examples of some of the larger refurbishments include:

  • A £multi-million revamp of Aberdeen station has improved security measures, lighting and lifts and incorporated major car parking facilities within the station complex.
  • Major refurbishment work has taken place at Oxford, Ealing Broadway and Bath Spa stations at a combined investment of £1.2 million. The development includes upgrades to station interiors, new accessible ticket offices at Oxford and Bath Spa and improvements to toilets, waiting rooms and seating areas.
  • A major facelift at Huntingdon station has involved restoration of the station canopy by Network Rail while First Capital Connect has installed new automatic ticket gates and platform shelters. Work is also complete on a brand new bus/rail interchange.
  • A £0.25 million investment at Selby station has completely refurbished the waiting room and buffet area.
  • £200,000 investment at Northallerton station has improved toilets, access and the associated subway.
  • A £750,000 refurbishment of Fort William Station transport hub has enhanced access and facilities.

As part of this programme we continue to invest in our stations and car parks achieving security accreditation the details of which can be found in the security section of this report.
