Waste management

Our operations produce both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Hazardous waste arises primarily from our bus maintenance activities and includes waste oil, interceptor waste, batteries, fluorescent tubes, oil filters and oily rags. Non-hazardous waste is a combination of waste arising at depots and the waste generated by our passengers and left on the buses. We monitor both the total volume of waste arising and the proportion of waste recycled.

This year we reduced our total waste arising by 3%. Hazardous waste reduced by 8% and interceptor waste by 5%.

Over the past year we have increased the rate of recycling of non-hazardous waste by 1.5% to 30.5%. The proportion of hazardous waste recycled has reduced slightly to 87%. Working closely with our waste management contractor we will continue to explore ways of improving our recycling rates.

We continue to promote recycling of phones and cartridges to raise money for Forest of Dreams. This ecological charity was established to purchase, manage and preserve land in North Wales as a sanctuary for wildlife and environmental biodiversity.

We have a contract in place to dispose of our redundant IT equipment in line with the new regulatory framework. Wherever possible, the company will refurbish machines and donate them to charities.
