Cut staff injury rate by at least 25%.Staff injury rate has reduced by 9%.
Cut passenger injury rate by at least 25%.The passenger injury rate has reduced by 10%.
Cut one day or more lost time injury rate by at least 25%.The one day or more lost time injury rate has reduced by 23%.
Reduce SPAD rate.The SPAD rate has increased by 16%.
Reduce the vehicle collision rate.The vehicle collision rate has reduced by 15%.

CUSTOMER AND COMMUNITY
TARGETPERFORMANCE
Achieve the following train company performance rates:
  • First Capital Connect: over 89%
  • First Great Western: 86%
  • First ScotRail: over 90%
  • First TransPennine Express: over 91%
All train operating companies achieved their targets apart from First Great Western where we continue to face problems of old infrastructure. Network Rail is investing heavily to replace track and signalling which will significantly improve the reliability of the railway. We are investing £200 million to improve trains and stations. Our entire High Speed Train fleet is now equipped with new engines offering double reliability.
Achieve Secure Station Award standard for 105 First Great Western Stations.This target was achieved; a total of 108 First Great Western stations were accredited.
Deliver at least 99% of our scheduled services in the UK Bus division. We delivered 98.8% of our scheduled services in the UK Bus division, just short of our target.
Achieve Blue Seal certification at an additional eight locations in First Vehicle Services.Target achieved; Blue Seal certification was achieved at an additional eight locations.
Continue to exceed 95% trips on time in First Transit.First Transit achieved their target with an average trips on time of 95.8% for the past twelve months.

Re-launch employee opinion survey across the UK Rail division and prepare an associated follow-up action plan.Employee opinion surveys were conducted across the UK Rail division and a new format piloted. Due to changes in format the results cannot be compared to previous years. Action plans have been developed in response to the findings.
Introduce a competence-based recruitment process for management posts in the UK Rail division.Achieved.
Reduce driver turnover in the UK Bus division to 21%.The annual average driver turnover for 2007/08 was 23.9%.
Prepare and deliver performance management training for all UK Bus directors and managers.The training has been prepared and is currently being delivered.
Set up a human resource management system for the UK Bus division.Achieved.
Agree and implement a Skills for Life strategy for the UK Bus division.A Skills for Life strategy has been developed and is being implemented.
Reduce driver turnover in First Transit by 10%.Driver turnover has increased.
Increase the proportion of the eligible workforce with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in North America.The percentage of the eligible workforce with ASE certification has increased by 1% in First Transit, 3% in First Student. It has remained constant in First Vehicle Services.

ENVIRONMENT
TARGETPERFORMANCE
Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from UK Bus and Rail divisions by 5% on 2006/07 levels.Our carbon dioxide emissions target was achieved in UK Bus with a 5.9% reduction in emissions but not in UK Rail.
Increase waste recycling in the UK Bus division by 5%.Waste recycling rates have increased by 1.5% in the UK Bus division.
Achieve ISO14001 accreditation for a further three bus companies and two additional rail companies.Achieved.
Reduce gas consumption in the rail depots by 5% per m2 of floor area on 2006/07 figures.Achieved.
Refine fuel usage monitoring to gain a better understanding of trends in carbon dioxide emissions in North America.First Transit has now improved their fuel usage monitoring and a similar system is being sought for First Student.
Introduce recycling of general waste at 95 locations across North America.This target has been achieved with 125 North American locations now taking part in recycling programmes.

COMMUNITY
TARGETPERFORMANCE
Develop our partnership with First's national charity Save the Children to maximise the benefit of community engagement. A partnership with Save the Children has been established and is supporting the delivery of a wide-ranging programme of fundraising events.
Standardise our processes for assessing charitable giving. All those seeking charitable giving must apply using a standardised form against clear criteria. A charity committee has been established to determine applications.
Establish a process for monitoring our levels of charitable giving.We have joined the London Benchmarking Group which has an established methodology for companies wishing to calculate their levels of community giving. We will be reporting using the methodology in the coming year.
Develop our relationship with BITC to provide additional volunteering opportunities for employees.We have continued to work with BITC to incorporate volunteering opportunities into our management and supervisory training programmes.

Our overall BITC score this year was 86.5% which places us in the silver performance band. In the BITC Environmental index we achieved 97% which places us in the platinum performance band.
