Managing security

Security is important to our passengers and employees and we have a responsibility to reduce security risks to as low a level as we can.

Security in North America is managed through our Group Security function supported by local specialist security personnel. A Security Director in North America has recently been appointed.

We continue to invest in security training for employees to help them recognise security risks and know how to respond. Training is tailored to the needs of the different businesses.

Technology also plays an important role. We are using tools like on-vehicle GPS and Child Check Mate (First Student) where the primary purpose is not directly security-related. We have, however, identified the security potential in both of these systems. For example, Child Check Mate also provides an on-board alarm system that deters theft.

We are extending the use of CCTV and security alarms on sites with a central monitoring capability. This is a cost-effective method of protecting our vehicles and premises.

We have upgraded our background checking processes for drivers to a level above the highest standards required. Only those who meet our criteria are considered for employment. We are applying the process to all new drivers who joined our North American operations in the recent acquisition to ensure they meet our standards.

Whilst we are far from complacent and continue to look for further ways to enhance our background checking process, we believe we are now industry leaders in this area.
