First is committed to being a socially responsible company and delivering more sustainable transport services

This report describes how we are progressing and the challenges we face. It sets out our business strategy and performance achievements. The report is divided into four sections. The first section covers First while subsequent sections detail the performance of our three operating divisions, UK Bus, UK Rail and North America.

The report is structured around the five key areas that support this commitment:

  • Managing the safety and security of our employees and customers
  • Delivering high quality customer service
  • Valuing our employees
  • Minimising our environmental impact
  • Engaging with the community

We seek to achieve continuous improvement in all these areas by setting targets and objectives and effectively monitoring performance.

Scope

Unless otherwise indicated the data in this report covers the period April 2007 to March 2008. It embraces all our UK and North American operations. Apart from safety data all other data excludes the companies associated with the Laidlaw acquisition finalised in October 2007. We make reference to the integration of the new operations into our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy throughout the report and discuss how we will incorporate them into our performance statistics in the years to come.
